The journal focuses on the concept of Ecohydrology as a transdisciplinary science dedicated to biological aspects of the hydrological cycle.

The notion of ‘dual regulation’ comes from the realization that biotic processes are propelled by the hydrological processes while in the same time structure and functioning of living organisms in biocenoses shape ultimately the hydrological cycle (Zalewski 2000Zalewski 2006). The understanding of those interdependencies is a key prerequisite for taking the informed actions to reverse degradation of the biosphere.

The novel element of this approach is the assumption that not only conservation but also regulation of ecosystem performance is necessary. Thus Ecohydrology focuses on understanding, quantifying and integrating hydrological and biogeochemical cycles in order to allocate the excessive nutrients and pollutants into non available pool in the basin. It entails that the approach and actions are taken from the landscape to molecular scale and ecological, economic and social measures are applied to reverse degradation of aquatic ecosystems (Zalewski et al. 1997). Ecohydrology provides also a systemic framework on how to use ecosystem properties as a new tool for the integrated water resources management (IWRM). It is complementary to already applied hydrotechnical solutions.
